What is the ETIAS permit?

The ETIAS — European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is commonly referred to as a Europe travel permit. It is a new mandatory pre-travel requirement for nationals of visa-exempt countries visiting Europe. Unlike a traditional visa, the ETIAS is obtained entirely online before you travel and is electronically linked to your passport.

The ETIAS permit will be required for entry into all Schengen Area countries and associated European nations — covering over 30 destinations including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and many more.

ETIAS permit vs Schengen visa

Many travellers confuse the ETIAS permit with a Schengen visa. They are very different:

ETIAS Permit

  • For visa-exempt nationals
  • Applied for entirely online
  • Valid for 3 years
  • Multiple entries permitted
  • No embassy visit required

Schengen Visa

  • For non visa-exempt nationals
  • Embassy or consulate application
  • Valid for specific trip dates
  • Single or multiple entry options
  • In-person appointment required

Who needs the ETIAS permit?

The ETIAS permit will be required for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area — including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and many others.

EU citizens and those who already require a Schengen visa will not need an ETIAS permit.

Frequently asked questions

Is the ETIAS a permit or a visa?
ETIAS is a travel authorisation — not a visa. It is often referred to as a travel permit because it grants permission to enter Europe, but the application process is entirely online and far simpler than a traditional visa application.
When will the ETIAS permit be required?
The ETIAS permit is expected to launch in late 2026. Until then, visa-exempt travellers can continue to visit the Schengen Area without any pre-travel authorisation.
Do UK citizens need an ETIAS permit for Europe?
Yes. Following Brexit, British nationals are no longer EU citizens and will require an ETIAS permit to visit EU and Schengen Area countries for short stays.
Does the ETIAS permit cover all of Europe?
The ETIAS covers all Schengen Area countries and associated nations — over 30 destinations in total. One permit covers all of these countries, so you do not need a separate permit for each country you visit.
Can I apply for an ETIAS permit for my family?
Yes. Each traveller requires their own individual ETIAS permit. ETA Permits accepts family applications and our team reviews all submissions together before they are submitted.
How long will the ETIAS permit take to process?
Most ETIAS applications are expected to be approved within minutes or hours. In some cases it may take longer if additional checks are required. We recommend applying well in advance of your travel date.
