What is the ETIAS permit?
The ETIAS — European Travel Information and Authorisation System — is commonly referred to as a Europe travel permit. It is a new mandatory pre-travel requirement for nationals of visa-exempt countries visiting Europe. Unlike a traditional visa, the ETIAS is obtained entirely online before you travel and is electronically linked to your passport.
The ETIAS permit will be required for entry into all Schengen Area countries and associated European nations — covering over 30 destinations including France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, and many more.

ETIAS permit vs Schengen visa
Many travellers confuse the ETIAS permit with a Schengen visa. They are very different:
ETIAS Permit
- For visa-exempt nationals
- Applied for entirely online
- Valid for 3 years
- Multiple entries permitted
- No embassy visit required
Schengen Visa
- For non visa-exempt nationals
- Embassy or consulate application
- Valid for specific trip dates
- Single or multiple entry options
- In-person appointment required
Who needs the ETIAS permit?
The ETIAS permit will be required for nationals of countries that currently enjoy visa-free access to the Schengen Area — including the United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and many others.
EU citizens and those who already require a Schengen visa will not need an ETIAS permit.
